Webroot Secure Anywhere Complete

January 11, 2014 By Avie Uniglicht

Q: Avie, What security software do you recommend – you know, Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware / Firewall – aren’t they all the same?

A:Great question. Actually, the top anti-virus products are NOT all the same. They are designed to work in different ways; their software integrates differently on your computer and devices; and they often approach protection in very different ways. Old-School methods of “Definitions” don’t work very well any more – with all of the malware variants, more behavior based approaches are necessary. That is where my choice comes in – Webroot Secure Anywhere Complete. Webroot utilizes the “Cloud” to warehouse it’s vast database of signatures and the client side is very small.  It is designed to monitor what goes on in system and calls home to verify with that Cloud to confirm you don’t have any nasty stuff installed.  If it finds that through behavior, something is wrong, it can reverse the “changes” made since the culprit was installed and bring the repaired state back to normal.  With security updates made to all other programs including the Operating System, I have not found  a Webroot protected system to be compromised as long as I’ve had it installed.

Webroot’s Cloud-Based Signatures and very small client side software set it apart
from other approaches to Virus and Malware protection. It quickly downloads
and installs on Windows and Mac clients and also supports Android and iOS devices.

The version Your Tech Concierge™ recommends Webroot Secure Anywhere Complete
is licensed to support 5 machines for 1-year. Special pricing is always available
to aSKaVIE client’s via the link below and on our Anti-Virus Boutique page.

If you need any help with your purchase or installation, please let me know.

How do I make my new Apple iPad connect to the Internet while I’m traveling?

January 8, 2014 By Avie Uniglicht

Q: Avie, How do I make my new Apple iPad connect to the Internet while I’m traveling?

A:The first version of the iPad available on 4/3/2010 connects wirelessly via WIFI, so if you are in range of a Wireless Router that you have permission to use (ie. Hotel, Coffee Shop, Airport, Friendly Neighbor), then you are all set. However, without the WIFI hotspot, you are out of luck until the next version of the iPad is released that will work on the AT&T 3G network. Of course, I have another solution that you can use right away. If you are in the regional coverage area of CLEAR Wireless WiMax service, you can subscribe to their $30/mo. service and attach the USB adapter to the optional portable/sharable ClearSpot.
This creates a mobile Wifi hotspot that you can share with up to 8 users. Not only will it provide WiFi for your iPad, you can use it with any of your WiFi enabled devices – Notebooks, Netbooks, iPhone, iPod Touch, you name it. Works in your home as well as on the road as long as you are within the CLEAR coverage area. Verizon and other wireless cellular carriers have similar devices which they call Intelligent Mobile Hotspots or Mifi devices. If you’d like more information on the CLEAR service, I have direct access as a sub-agent for CLEAR to help you do a site survey and assessment of how it may work for you in your home or business

Are Mac’s now being targeted by Malware?

January 8, 2014 By Avie Uniglicht

Q: Avie, is it true that Mac’s are now being targeted by Malware? I thought it wasn’t possible to infect a Mac and what can I do to protect myself if this is true?

A:It was only a matter of time for the number of Macs in the marketplace to reach a point where it would be attractive for hackers to attack them. No, Macs are not impossible to infect and if a person is not careful while surfing, they can easily stumble upon a site or link that can introduce the possibility of infection. The first Mac Malware is showing up as “MacDefender” or some variant of this. Read all about how to protect your Safari browser from automatically running it and what to do to remove it if you have already allowed it to enter your Mac:

MacDefender malware protection and removal guide My Anti-Virus guidebook offers up both free and commercial Mac Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware products. Use the “Find it Fast” links above or on https://www.aSKaVIE.com to get more info.
